Date Labels in Mauritius: The Nuances of "Best Before" and "Expiry Date"
In the vibrant aisles of our local shops and supermarkets, you'll find a little mystery hiding behind the labels of "Best Before" and "Expiry Date." What are they?
of Mauritians do not consume past Before Date food products
do not consume products past their Best Before Date due to this misunderstanding
of us do not consume products past their Best Before Date because of fear
Here's the catch!
BEST BEFORE
= QUALITY
The Best Before Date tells you when a product is expected to be at its best in terms of quality, flavour, texture, and nutrition. Products are still safe to consume even after this date!
EXPIRY DATE
= SAFETY
The Expiry Date signals the last day when it's safe to consume or use a product. Products are not safe to consume even after this date!
To BB to garde. To EX to zete
Remember, Best Before (BB)= safe to consume after the date, but Expiry Date (EXP) = not safe to consume after the date.
Now it's time for all of us (yes, every Mauritian!) to grasp the difference and stop wasting perfectly good food and hard-earned money!
